I am running in the park right now. (Şu anda parkta koşuyorum. ✔)
They were speaking quietly when I entered. (İçeri girdiğimde sessizce konuşuyorlardı. ✔)

► 2. Stative Verbs (Durum Fiilleri)

I am knowing your name ❌ → I know your name
I am not believing in UFOs ❌ → I don't believe in UFOs

She is wanting an apple ❌ → She wants an apple

Verbs (Action Verbs and Stative Verbs)

In English, words that denote an action, occurrence, or state of being are called verbs. Verbs are the core component of every sentence; they give essential information about what the subject does or what state the subject is in.

Fundamental Classification:

English verbs are divided into two main grammatical categories based on their function:
1. Action Verbs (Dynamic Verbs): Describe physical or mental activities and processes.
2. Stative Verbs (State Verbs): Describe conditions, feelings, beliefs, possession, or states of being rather than active movements.

► 1. Action Verbs (Dynamic Verbs)

Action verbs describe an activity or event that a subject can actively perform. They answer the question: "What is the subject doing?"

Verb Meaning Example Sentence Grammar Note
run move rapidly on foot I run every morning to keep fit. Habitual physical action
speak say words / communicate Please speak louder. I can't hear you. Active communication
call / tell phone / communicate information I called my mother and told her the news. Past completed actions
fly travel through the air The birds fly south in autumn. Dynamic movement
eat consume food She ate a healthy salad for lunch. Physical action
bring / take carry / fetch He brought his laptop and took some notes. Physical handling
Key Feature: Progressive / Continuous Aspect (-ing)

Because action verbs involve an active process, they can freely be used in both Simple Tenses and Continuous / Progressive Tenses (-ing):
I am running in the park right now. (Action currently in progress ✔)
They were speaking quietly when I entered. (Action in progress in the past ✔)

► 2. Stative Verbs (State Verbs)

Stative verbs describe a condition, feeling, belief, or state of being without physical motion. They focus on how things are rather than what they do.

Category Common Verbs Example Sentence Grammar Focus
Mental States / Knowledge know, understand, remember, realize Do you know my name? Mental knowledge
Beliefs & Opinions believe, doubt, trust, think I don't believe in UFOs. Belief / conviction
Comprehension understand, recognize I don't understand anything. Cognitive understanding
Being & Appearance be, seem, look, appear I am very tired today. Physical / mental state
Emotions & Desires love, like, hate, want, prefer We are all very happy to see you here. Emotional state
Possession have, own, belong, possess This umbrella belongs to my brother. Ownership relation
Perception & Senses see, hear, smell, taste, feel The food smells delicious. Inherent sensory attribute
⚠️ Critical Rule: Stative Verbs Do Not Take -ing!

Stative verbs describe ongoing states rather than active progression. Therefore, they are NOT used in Continuous (-ing) tenses, even when referring to the current moment. Instead, use Simple Present Tense:
I am knowing your name ❌ → I know your name
I am not believing in UFOs ❌ → I don't believe in UFOs
I am not understanding anything ❌ → I don't understand anything
She is wanting an apple ❌ → She wants an apple
