Action Verbs (Eylem Fiilleri: Geçişli ve Geçişsiz Fiiller)
Action Verbs (Aksiyon veya Eylem Fiilleri), bir hareket, eylem veya dinamik süreç belirten ve öznenin ne yaptığından haber veren fiillerdir.
Eylem fiillerinin en belirgin dilbilgisi özelliği, sonuna -ing takısı alarak Continuous (sürekli) zamanlarda rahatlıkla kullanılabilmeleridir:
- I’m having a shower now. (Şu anda duş alıyorum.)
- My sister is walking along the beach. (Kız kardeşim sahil boyunca yürüyor.)
- We are playing football in the garden. (Bahçede futbol oynuyoruz.)
► 1. Transitive Verbs (Geçişli Fiiller)
Cümlede bir nesne (object) alan veya nesnesi olmadan anlamı tamamlanmayan fiillere geçişli fiil (transitive verb) denir. Başka bir deyişle, eylemin etkisi doğrudan başka bir varlık üzerine geçer.
Nesne, cümlede öznenin yaptığı işten doğrudan etkilenen ögedir. Yükleme "ne?", "neyi?" veya "kimi?" soruları sorularak bulunur:
-
She broke the window. (Camı kırdı.)
→ Soru: Neyi kırdı? → Cevap: Camı (the window). Kırma eyleminden etkilenen cam nesnedir. -
I saw the old man. (Yaşlı adamı gördüm.)
→ Soru: Kimi gördüm? → Cevap: Yaşlı adamı (the old man). Görme eyleminden etkilenen yaşlı adam nesnedir.
| Özne | Geçişli Fiil (Transitive Verb) | Nesne (Direct Object) | Türkçe Anlamı |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | punched | him. | Onu dövdüm. (Kimi dövdüm? → Onu) |
| She | kissed | her daughter. | Kızını öptü. (Kimi öptü? → Kızını) |
| We | love | each other. | Birbirimizi severiz. (Kimi severiz? → Birbirimizi) |
| He | saw | his wife. | Karısını gördü. (Kimi gördü? → Karısını) |
Geçişli fiiller nesne olmadan tek başlarına bırakıldıklarında cümle gramer ve anlam açısından eksik kalır:
• The child broke. ❌ (Çocuk kırdı → Neyi kırdı? Cümle eksik!)
→ The child broke the vase. ✔ (Çocuk vazoyu kırdı → Tam cümle)
• The judge sentenced. ❌ (Hakim mahkûm etti → Kimi mahkûm etti? Cümle eksik!)
→ The judge sentenced the murderer. ✔ (Hakim caniyi mahkûm etti → Tam cümle)
► 2. Intransitive Verbs (Geçişsiz Fiiller)
Geçişsiz fiiller de birer aksiyon/eylem fiilidir; ancak direkt bir nesne almazlar. Bu fiillerle kurulan cümlelerde nesne bulunmaz; eylemin etkisi yalnızca özne üzerinde kalır.
| Örnek Cümle | Fiil | Nesne Var mı? | Açıklama |
|---|---|---|---|
| He died. | died (ölmek) | Yok | Öldü. (Nesne gerekmez, anlam tamdır) |
| I fell. | fell (düşmek) | Yok | Düştüm. (Eylem öznede başlar ve biter) |
| You smiled. | smiled (gülümsemek) | Yok | Gülümsedin. (Tek başına tam anlamlıdır) |
| The baby is sleeping. | is sleeping (uyumak) | Yok | Bebek uyuyor. (Geçişsiz eylem) |
| The train arrived on time. | arrived (varmak) | Yok (Zaman zarfı var) | Tren vaktinde vardı. |
Geçişsiz bir fiilden sonra gelen yer (in London) veya zaman (yesterday) ifadeleri birer nesne değil, zarftır. Bir fiilin geçişli olup olmadığını anlamak için her zaman "neyi?" veya "kimi?" soruları sorulmalıdır.
• He arrived in Paris. → Nereye vardı? Paris'e (Yer zarfı). Neyi/Kimi vardı? Yanıt yok → Fiil geçişsizdir.
► 3. Verbs That Function Both Transitive and Intransitive
İngilizce'de pek çok fiil, cümlede kullanıldıkları yere ve bağlama göre hem geçişli hem de geçişsiz olarak kullanılabilir:
| Fiil | Intransitive Kullanım (Geçişsiz - Nesnesiz) | Transitive Kullanım (Geçişli - Nesneli) |
|---|---|---|
| laugh | She laughed. (Güldü - nesnesiz) | She laughed at me. (Bana güldü - edatlı nesne) |
| understand | I understand. (Anlıyorum - nesnesiz) | I understand her. (Onu anlıyorum - nesneli) |
| read | He is reading in his room. (Odasında okuyor) | He is reading a book. (Bir kitap okuyor - nesne: a book) |
| open | The door opened slowly. (Kapı yavaşça açıldı) | She opened the door. (Kapıyı açtı - nesne: the door) |
| play | The children are playing outside. (Çocuklar dışarıda oynuyor) | They play chess every Sunday. (Satranç oynarlar - nesne: chess) |
| drive | Careful! You drive too fast. (Çok hızlı sürüyorsun) | She drives an electric car. (Elektrikli bir araba sürüyor) |
Action Verbs (Transitive and Intransitive Verbs)
Action Verbs (also known as Dynamic Verbs) describe physical movements, activities, or dynamic events performed by a subject. They tell us what the subject does.
The most defining characteristic of action verbs is that they can readily take the -ing suffix and appear in Continuous / Progressive tenses:
- I’m having a shower now. (Action currently unfolding)
- My sister is walking along the beach. (Physical movement in progress)
- We are playing football in the garden. (Dynamic group activity)
► 1. Transitive Verbs
A transitive verb is an action verb that requires a direct object to complete its meaning. The action expressed by the verb transitions or passes directly onto a person or thing.
The direct object receives the action performed by the subject. You can find it by asking the verb: "What?" or "Whom?":
-
She broke the window.
→ Question: Broke what? → Answer: The window. The window receives the breaking action; it is the direct object. -
I saw the old man.
→ Question: Saw whom? → Answer: The old man. The old man is the direct object.
| Subject | Transitive Verb | Direct Object | Syntactic Analysis |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | punched | him. | Punched whom? → him |
| She | kissed | her daughter. | Kissed whom? → her daughter |
| We | love | each other. | Love whom? → each other |
| He | saw | his wife. | Saw whom? → his wife |
When a transitive verb lacks an object, the clause sounds grammatically incomplete:
• The child broke. ❌ (Broke what? Incomplete!)
→ The child broke the vase. ✔ (Complete transitive sentence)
• The judge sentenced. ❌ (Sentenced whom? Incomplete!)
→ The judge sentenced the murderer. ✔ (Complete transitive sentence)
► 2. Intransitive Verbs
An intransitive verb is also an action verb, but it does not take a direct object. The action stays entirely with the subject and does not transfer to anything else.
| Example Sentence | Verb | Has Direct Object? | Grammar Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| He died. | died | No object | Complete sense without any object |
| I fell. | fell | No object | Action remains on the subject |
| You smiled. | smiled | No object | Self-contained action |
| The baby is sleeping. | is sleeping | No object | Intransitive continuous action |
| The train arrived on time. | arrived | No object (time adverbial) | Adverbials modify, not receive the action |
Prepositional phrases of place (in Paris) or time adverbials (yesterday) are adverbials, not direct objects. Always ask "What?" or "Whom?" to verify transitivity:
• He arrived in Paris. → Where did he arrive? In Paris (place). Arrived what/whom? No answer → Verb is intransitive.
► 3. Verbs That Can Be Both Transitive and Intransitive
Many English verbs are ambitransitive; depending on context, they can function with or without a direct object:
| Verb | Intransitive Usage (No Object) | Transitive Usage (With Object) |
|---|---|---|
| laugh | She laughed. (Intransitive) | She laughed at me. (Prepositional object) |
| understand | I understand. (Intransitive) | I understand her. (Direct object: her) |
| read | He is reading quietly. (Intransitive) | He is reading a mystery novel. (Object: a novel) |
| open | The door opened. (Intransitive) | She opened the door. (Object: the door) |
| play | The children are playing outside. | They play tennis every weekend. (Object: tennis) |
| drive | You drive too fast. (Intransitive) | She drives an electric car. (Object: an electric car) |
