Action Verbs and State Verbs (Eylem ve Durum Fiilleri)

ACTION VERBS (Eylem Fiilleri)

Action verbs eylem bildiren fiillere verilen genel isimdir. Eylem fiilleri hem Simple Present Tense ile (geniş zamanda) hem de Present Continuous Tense ile (fiilin sonuna -ing takısı alarak) kullanılabilirler.

Aşağıdaki örnekleri inceleyiniz:

  • I run every morning. (Her sabah koşarım.)
  • Why are you running? We have plenty of time. (Niye koşuyorsun? Çok vaktimiz var.)
  • I read every night before bed. (Her gece yatmadan önce okurum.)
  • I've been reading this book for over two weeks. It is very boring. (Bu kitabı iki haftadır okuyorum. Çok sıkıcı.)
  • Suzie drinks milk every morning before school. (Suzie her sabah okuldan önce süt içer.)
  • My father is drinking a bottle of coke now. He must be very thirsty. (Babam şu anda bir şişe kola içiyor. Çok susamış olmalı.)

STATE VERBS (Durum Fiilleri)

Bazı fiiller Present Continuous Tense ile kullanılmaz. Bu fiiller "state verbs" yani "durum fiili" olarak adlandırılır.

Şimdiki zaman yapıları bir eylemin fiziksel ve görsel olarak yapıldığını gösterirler. Dolayısıyla soyut düşünmek, sevmek, anlamak, sahip olmak gibi soyut anlamlı fiiller continuous (be + -ing) yapısında kullanılamazlar. Bu fiiller Simple Tense ile ifade edilirler. Örneğin "I love you" Simple Present Tense ile yazılmasına rağmen, Türkçe’ye "Seni seviyorum" diye çevrilir.

Örnek Doğru / Yanlış Kullanımlar:

❌ She is loving chocolate.

She loves chocolate. (Doğru)

❌ I am hating you.

I hate you. (Doğru)

❌ She isn’t understanding me.

She doesn’t understand me. (Doğru)

HEM CONTINUOUS HEM SIMPLE KULLANILABİLEN FİİLLER VE ANLAM FARKLARI

Bazı fiiller hem Continuous hem de Simple formda kullanılabilirler. Fakat bu farklı kullanım, anlam farklılığına yol açar. Aşağıda iki zamanla da kullanılabilen ve farklı anlamlar taşıyan fiiller verilmiştir:

► 1. THINK

(a) What do you think about the new English teacher? I think he is a nice man!

(Yeni İngilizce öğretmeni hakkında ne düşünüyorsun? Bence iyi bir adam.)

(b) I am thinking about the exam tomorrow. It will be a difficult one.

(Yarınki sınavı düşünüyorum. Zor bir sınav olacak.)

(a) cümlesinde think, fikir gösteren soyut anlamlı bir fiildir. Kişilerin belli konularda fikir sahibi olmaları fiziksel bir durum değildir. (b) cümlesinde ise think, fiziksel ve görülebilir bir özelliği olan zihinsel bir süreçtir. "Öyle derin derin ne düşünüyorsun?" sorusunda olduğu gibi eylem somutlaşmıştır.

► 2. HAVE

(a) I have two cats and a dog. Do you have any pets?

(Benim bir köpeğim ve bir de kedim var. Senin evcil hayvanın var mı?)

(b) I am having a nice time in my speaking classes.

(Konuşma sınıflarında hoş vakit geçiriyorum.)

Birinci cümlede have fiili sahip olmak anlamındadır ve asla continuous olarak kullanılamaz. İkinci örnekte ise have fiili vakit geçirmek, eğlenmek anlamında aktif/somut bir yapıdadır.

► 3. SMELL

(a) All flowers smell nice.

(Bütün çiçekler güzel kokar.)

(b) The little girl is smelling the flowers.

(Küçük kız çiçekleri kokluyor.)

Birinci cümlede smell soyut bir durumdur. Çiçekler kokma eylemini fiziksel ve görülebilir bir şekilde yapmazlar. İkinci cümlede ise smell fiili aktif bir eylemdir; küçük kızın koklama eylemi fiziksel olarak gözlemlenebilir.

Action Verbs and State Verbs (Dynamic vs Stative)
