However, joining the EU also means following its rules. For Iceland, one very important thing is fishing. Fishing is a big part of Iceland's economy and culture. Many people in Iceland worried that if they joined the EU, they would lose control over their fishing waters. They wanted to keep their own rules for fishing to protect their fish and their jobs.
