English (Original)
Long ago, before any Europeans came, Native American people called the Lenape lived on the land where New York City is today. They lived near rivers and the ocean, fishing and hunting. It was a beautiful place with many trees and animals. The Lenape people had their own culture and way of life for many centuries.
In the early 1600s, Dutch explorers arrived. They saw the good location for trade. In 1626, a Dutchman named Peter Minuit bought the island of Manhattan from the Lenape people. He paid with goods like beads and tools. The Dutch built a small settlement there and called it New Amsterdam. It became an important place for ships and trade because of its excellent harbor.
Later, in 1664, the English came and took control of New Amsterdam. They changed its name to New York, after the Duke of York. The city continued to grow. Many people from different countries came to live and work there. New York became a big port city, and new buildings, roads, and bridges appeared. It was a place where people could find new opportunities.
